Forgotten Battle, The After D-Day the Allies captured the Port of Antwerp to resupply their invasion of Germany...but the approach to the port was controlled by German occupied Walcheren Island. This good Dutch-Belgian film tells what happened using four fascinating plot lines that combine to give a very complete picture of the situation: A Dutch secretary who wants the Dutch resistance to help rescue her brother, a disenchanted Dutch Nazi soldier returning from the Russian front, a British glider pilot that crash lands in the area, and the insane Canadian general who orders his soldiers to run into machine guns to see if they get lucky... . All the parts do not integrate well, but the film manages to tell an interesting story. Netflix 20201217 Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. M 3
Leon: The Professional This is a Luc Besson wild ride from 1994. Jean Reno, the French tough guy, plays a quiet hit man that plies his trade in New York. Nathalie Portman a young girl at that time plays his neighbors' child. Destiny throws them together when her family gets bumped off. That is the plot but the rest is pure creative Besson - every few minutes a surprise. Still enjoyable by the director who invented the modern action genre. Netflix 19941118 Luc Besson M 2
Cold Mountain Well done Civil War love story of a brave confederate soldier giving up on the war madness to walk back to his girlfriend in North Carolina. The local farm boys enthusiasm for going to war as Confederate soldiers appears as boyish naivite because the reason for it is not shown. Politicians actually scared them about the North wanting to impose blacks upon them as equals. Poor whites fought the war because they wanted segregation, they did not want to mix with blacks. The events after the Civil War were 10 years of Reconstruction when slaves enjoyed full civil rights protected by the Union Army which occuppied the South. As soon as the Union army left the South, Southern states denied civil rights to ex-slaves, created black segregation (which is what the farm boys fought for), instituted black laws for sharecropping which were worse than slavery (which is what southern slave owners had fought for). The United States was kept as one country (which is what the North fought for). In the 144 years since 1877, the old Confederate South has managed to split the country politically "from the inside" into the Republican Dis-United States. Which means that the South managed to deny the North even the Civil War success of keeping the country together... Netflix 20031225 Anthony Minghella M 3
Love and other drugs A quick-witted star salesman flirts with a gorgeous woman who will have sex with him immediately but will not allow any emotional connection. Intrigued he finds out that she has Parkinsons and does not want to saddle any potential lovers with the load of taking care of her. After both we and him find out how serious Parkinsons can end up being, he decides to give up his fast-track career and take care of her. It is an up beat movie because the director wisely chooses to end on that high note. AmaPri 20101124 Edward Zwick M 2
Mary Magdalen The director of this movie knows how to present an emotional reality and avoid the overstiffnes which plagues most biblical movies. The result is a touching emotional essay which presents Jesus , Mary Magdalen, Judas, and Peter, in very moving situations which illustrate how to bring about the kingdom of God on this earth. Very inspiring. At the end it is mentioned that the tradition that Mary Magdalen was a prostitute started in 591, and based on more recent research has been reversed by the Vatican in 2016, giving Mary Magdalen a status comparable to the rest of the 12 Apostles. This movie shows her in that very powerful role in a very loving and respectful way. Netflix 2018 Garth Davis M 2
The Last Bastion Excellent series about Peru in 1821 the year of its war of Independence against Spain. The series presents the story of the Robles, a landowner family born in Peru of European descent and their 4 children. One is an officer in the Spanish Army, the other a lawyer who wants independence from Spain, a daughter who is in love with an indian farm laborer, and a bastard mulata half-sister from a slave mother. The complex racial, gender, and sibling tensions are explored in a brilliant plot which masterfully arranges wise solutions that create a credible successful family unit. Such success, shows how society at large could work out its racial and gender tensions. Rare wisdom to be found in an exciting TV series. Script by Eduardo and Maria Luisa Adrianzen. Holds great interest for Peruvians. Netflix 20181210 Marco Moscoso S 1
Bard of Blood The Taliban from Afghanistan traditionally infiltrates the Baluchistan northern province of Pakistan. India mantains a spy network to keep tabs on the Taliban's illegal activitivies in Baluchistan. An accomplished spy retires after his partner is killed in a failed mission in Baluchistan. The Indian spy agency needs his help to rescue 4 agents captured by the Baluchistan infiltrated Taliban, and he takes the assignment. This spy series is very interesting because it combines the highest modern standards of the genre with the exotic environment of northern Pakistan and very credible knowledge of Taliban operations. Very exciting and sophisticated. Netflix 20190927 Ribhu Dasgupta S 1
Body of Lies A superb spy thriller from director Ridley Scott, with Russell Crowe and Leonardo Di Caprio. A CIA agent plays a double game in his partnership with Jordanian intelligence in order to capture an Iranian skillful terrorist intent on blowing many targets in the West. From the first frame one is captured by excellent storytelling in exotic locations. Netflix 20081010 Ridley Scott M 1
The Unforgivable Good surprises in the final part make the film worthwhile. But it takes a long time to get there. It should be watched in parts so the intensity of the negative turns doest not overwhelm you before the great ending. Netflix 20211124 Nora Fingscheidt M 3
Sniper: Reload Well made sniper movie with American marines caught up between the Congo government and rebel guerrillas. The exotic locale together with interesting characters makes a superb suspense movie. Netflix 20110426 Claudio Fah M 2
From Paris with Love A classic Luc Besson special agent no-holds-barred exciting movie, which, true to himself, Besson even makes funny. You do not want to miss this action packed film in the streets of Paris with John Travolta at his best playing the senior terrorist chaser. Netflix till end of 2021 20100205 Pierre Morel, story by Luc Besson M 1
Barbarians In the year 9 CE in the battle of the Teutoburg Forest, an alliance of Germanic Tribes led by Arminius a Roman army officer of Barbarian blood that changed sides before the battle, made history by massacring 3 legions at the height of Cesar Augustus' Roman Empire power. This historical anchor makes this German series interesting. Nazi's were obsessed with ancient Germanic people and used the historical victory to bolster their racial superiority theories and Arminius was portrayed as an early blonde Hitler. The producers of the series, reflecting the current German culture's rejection of Nazism since the exposure around 2000 of the WWII German Army as a criminal organization, chose to use a black haired actor to play Arminius and had him praise multicultural instead of "master race" ideals. The series does a good job of presenting the historical period and (like the series Vikings), also uses a fascinating plot. Writing this led me to discover the superb work of Spencer McDaniel in his website Tales of Times Forgotten: https://talesoftimesforgotten.com/2020/11/14/how-historically-accurate-is-netflixs-barbarians/ The last episode was dissppointing-they chose to do monologues among battle scenes and the lack of action did not work well for a conclusion where dynamic movement would have better expressed the glory of the victory. Netflix 2020  Andreas Heckmann, Arne Nolting and Jan Martin Scharf S 1
The Hand of God Paolo Sorrentino takes up the mantle from Fellini and continues the exploration of the meaning of the human sexual condition through Neapolitan cultural realities. If you were raised in a repressive Catholic culture, this movie will light you up and leave you glowing. This story of a teen-age boy coming of age in Naples, makes you think of being absorbed into a pulsating body of humanity, a palpitating gigantic organism laying on the beach by the sea. He runs into many types, some benign and some malignant, as he is integrated into this huge Neapolitan mamal. And in 1986 the English team was eliminated by the Argentinian team with a goal which many believe was done with the hand of Maradona but nobody could prove it, and it gave Argentina a cheating success in their centuries long fight against the English. In an interview Maradona said the goal was scored by Maradona's head (legal) and the hand of God (illegal in soccer). It instantly became a image for the human penchant for artful cheating to say: the "hand of God" did it. This movie is an exploration of how we might recognize the "hand of God," in our humanity. Netflix 20211201 Paolo Sorrentino M 1
Mosul Mosul was captured by ISIS. The elite Nineve SWAT team continued to fight them all the way until ISIS fled the city in defeat. Nineve SWAT became the autoinmune system that fought the infection of ISIS throughout the alley-veins of the Mosul organism. This movie takes you to those ruined alleys, while telling you the story of a young gifted recruit who slowly becomes convinced of the rightness of their cause, until he becomes their leader in the end. Most of the members of Nineveh SWAT were from Mosul, and they all had relatives killed by ISIS which made them very tough fighters. Seeing this movie Americans should begin to appreciate what they did to Iraq by invading it, disbanding the army and the police, and occupying it. While it is true that the government of Iraq was not good, the real victims of the destruction of the Iraq government were the people of Iraq. ISIS arose in the power vacuum left after Americans had destroyed the Iraqui forces of order. Aside from its value as a witness to what Americans did to Iraq, the goal of this excellent war movie is to honor the Nineve SWAT team who fought ISIS till they fled. Very well told story that illuminates the reality of what happened in the Iraq invasion so you will not forget it and never want it repeated. Netflix 20190904 Mathew Michael Carnahan M 1
Genius If somebody had told me they were going to make an action movie about the process of editing literature, I would have thought they were crazy. Proof to the contrary is the most incredible British-American movie portraying the process of containing raving monster genius Thomas Wolfe into published books as done by genius editor Max Perkins. Run to watch this if you love literature and love movies. Netflix DVD 20160216 Michael Grandage M 1
Article 15 Article 15 of the 1950 Indian Constitution stipulates the equality of all citizens. But the ancient caste system continues to operate in India. We get an education on the caste system when some 8 policemen in a circle around their newly arrived chief, reveal their caste in a very matter-of-fact way, and state how it makes them superior or inferior to the two officers next to them. Appropriately, the moview deals with an investigation of a murder case where the victims, being of the lowest caste, are considered expendable by most of the police force. Caste systems in India, the U.S., and other societies are very slow to change. The Wikipedia plot summary is very helpful to clarify the complex Indian names in this award winning movie (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Article_15_(film) ) Netflix 20190628 Anubhav Sinha M 3
Panipat-The Great Betrayal A lush spectacular epic Indian movie about the 1761 famous battle of Panipat where the Hindus lost but inflicted such damage to the Afghan army that they went back home and never tried to invade India any more. This is the story of the famous Hindu hero Sadashiv who made them pay dearly for their victory. A delight to watch if you like plush spectaculars with good actors and a lot of action. Shows off the special ability of Director Gowariker who is known for very polished spectaculars. His works include Lagaan (2001 nominated for academy award), Swades (2004), Jodhaa Akbar (2008), What's Your Raashee? (2009), Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey (2010) and Mohenjo Daro (2016). Netflix 20191206 Ashutosh Gowariker M 1
The Lost Daughter Olivia Coleman plays Leda, a British comparative literature professor in her 40's on vacation at a beach. The Greek myth of Leda who is raped by the god Zeus in the shape of a swan has been very popular with artists because it allowed them to portray lovemaking without censorship (Wikipedia shows many photos of these works). Leda in the movie feels guilty about having abandoned her daughters twenty years prior to indulge her literary and carnal pleasures with her own Zeus, but she knows she had to do it. And it happens that at the beach a young mother is having just as many problems with her daughter and her husband. Leda is obsessed with observing this replaying of her own drama and it is delightful to watch Coleman's superb acting hold center stage in this psychological study. Netflix 20211217 Maggie Gyllenhaal M 3
The White Tiger While at Columbia U. the director of this movie befriends Adiga and encourages him to write novels. Adiga's first novel becomes a NY Times best seller called The White Tiger and Bahrani makes this movie of it. Balram, a low caste Indian, becomes a driver for a rich aimless youngster. It is a huge step up for Balram but there is no way to advance further and after a while he feels stuck. There are only two ways forward for his low caste, politics or crime and most remain stuck. Once in a great while some servants like him break through but it is so rare they are called white tigers. Balram turns out to be one of them. If you have an interest in India, it is a fascinating movie. Netflix 20210113 Ramin Bahrani M 2
Pad Man If you are interested in the village culture of India, you will find out in this movie how strong are the taboos about women issues. They are never to be discussed with men under penalty of strong shunning. This is the story of a nice husband who finds out that women were using rags for their periods because sanitary pads were very expensive. He wonders why they cost 55 rupees when he could make them himself for less than 2 rupees. The movie tells the story of how he starts making them and after many troubles succeeds in creating an industry which revolutionizes the life of village women. This is a beautiful story where good people succeed Netflix 20180209 R. Balki M 2
The Killer (O Matador) Stylish Brazilian fast moving Cangaceiro (cowboy) bandit story taking place in the arid Cangaco region of Northern Brasil. It does a great job of telling an interesting story of fast killers and frontier lawless life. The movie starts with a couple of bad guys pushing around a father and his two kids. The father asks them not bother his kids and in exchange he will tell them a story. And this is the story of the movie and it is well told. In 1953, the Brasilian song Cangaceiro became and international hit throughout the world. Netflix 20171120 Marcello Galvao M 2
Reina del Sur A Mexican super series that broke all records of viewership over many years suported by good scripts from a series of best seller novels from noted Spanish author Arturo Perez-Reverte. As the series acquired solid viewership it became more and more polished and fun to watch. One of the more enjoyable long term watch series if you are disciplined enough to only watch a short episode a day which is not easy due to the many very interesting plot twists. Perez-Reverte was inspired by the pinacle of all adventure stories, The Count of Montecristo, and he borrows its superb plot in the first season, and spins comparable plots in the second season. The weaker parts are amply compensated by the stronger parts. Netflix 20110228 Walter Doehner S 1
Two Distant Strangers 2021 Short Oscar winner. A very powerful movie using a repeating scene plot about a young successful black man leaving his fancy girlfriend's apartment and the white policeman outside the building. The black man keeps walking out of the building and the policeman keeps finding different reasons to question him that trigger his suspicions and degenerate into situations where he ends up killing the black man. An excellent way to learn about injustice. Netflix 20201120 Travon Free and Martin Desmond Roe M 1
Lost Bullet Superb French suspense movie about a gifted car metal worker that knows how to modify race cars to withstand severe crashes. The police recruits him to modify their cars to be able to crash fleeing criminal cars. The idea is interesting enough, and aside from the spectacular and very original car crashes, the movie also includes a long physical fight like nothing seen before anywhere. Totally engaging. Reminded one of Luc Besson's style Netflix 20200619 Gillaume Pierret M 1
The Kindness of Strangers Canada and Denmark make the most movies I love because they focus on the possibilities of how the world could be instead of focusing on how bad everything is. In this case they got together and funded the most wonderful movie about a charming mother and her two sons trying to survive in Manhattan. It is very difficult, except they find a secret world. In that most inhuman of places there are oddball strangers living on the edge, who naturally have an affinity for helping others like them. I was surprised to enjoy so much a movie about barely surviving in NY. It makes you feel how embers can keep human life warm in the cold winters of life and that is medicine we all need. Netflix 20191212 Lone Scherfig M 1
Can you keep a Secret? Actress Alexandra Daddario uses something like Marisa Tomei's vulnerable passionate style to thoroughly charm us in this romantic comedy. It also manages to shock us with a candid conversation about cunnilingus in an elevator which shows how far society has come in accepting sex as a human activity as normal as eating. Charming commedy Netflix 20190816 Elise Duran M 2
Love Hard A very effective commedy that manages to teach us serious subtle lessons about humanity through one very interesting online dating situation. Fun to watch and laugh with the well portrayed characters. Netflix 20211105 Hernan Jimenez M 2
Suburra Superb Italian Roman gang series. Power in Rome, as in every large city, balances between corrupt politicians, the Vatican, the aristocracy, and the gangsters that control the beach area of Ostia, the gypsy gang of Rome, and a mysterious gangster that brokers deals between all the groups, called Samurai. The series story is that Samurai has bribed a cardinal to get a large parcel in the beach that he is trying to sell to the Sicilian Maffia who does not have any foothold in Rome but wants one. The series excels in creating colorfull characters from each of the power groups among which the central ones are the young princes of the gangs who in their bids to take over become friends with princes of the opposing gangs. The Suburra neighborhood of ancient Rome survives today in the city. Netflix 20171006 Various directors S 1
Greenleaf A very interesting x-ray view at the inside of a black mega church. Sin and mysticism mix throughout and portray the human situation in a very effective way amplified by the "mega" element of a very successful organization. Excellent characters well portrayed by excellet actors create a very attractive mix. We were able to remedy the lengthy episodes by watching half episode at a time, but Seasons 3 and 4 overextended the plot too much. Netflix S 3
Generation 56K Delightful Italian romantic comedy series having the island of Procida and Naples as backdrop and the most charming ensemble of character actors. Have a vacation from boring ugly films and fall in love with Italy once more. The only misstep in this movie is the title which might make many viewers miss the treasure it hides. Netflix 20210701 Francesco Capaldo S 1
Winter on Fire: Ukraine's Fight for Freedom 2014 This is the moving story of the 2014 Ukrainian People's Revolution. Pro Putin President Yanukovitch went along with the hugely popular movement to join the European Union. Then in November 21, 2013 his prime minister surprisingly announced that Ukraine would not join the European Union and gave some excuses for the failure. Someone posted a Facebook announcement to gather in the center of Kyiv at Maidan Square. Some 300 people showed up but by the end of the week 15,000 people had shown up. The police watched them but could not overcome the huge numbers. The occupation of downtown Kyiv ended up more than 90 days later when president Yanukovich was required to resign and fled to Russia. There were many people killed but they did not quit. Netflix 20151009 Evgeny Afineevsky D 1
Luna Park Good Italian mystery series that plays off a poor carnival family's encounters with a rich family starting at the end of WWII to the present time set in 1962. Season 1 ends with the unresolved plot left for a later season. Netflix 20210920 Isabella Aguilar S 3
Emily in Paris Charming series about a young American girl assigned to the Paris office of an advertising firm. The Foreigner Pierce Brosnam plays an older IRA fighter trying to protect the peace treaty in Northern Ireland while hothead catholic fighters want to avenge the death of their relatives at all cost. They blow up a store trying to kill as many as possible among whom is the teenage daughter of a Vietnamese man in his 60's. Desolate he asks Brosnam for the names of the culprits and does not believe that Brosnam does not know (which is the truth at that point). Brosnam blows him away, and the oriental tells him he will make him change his mind. And he does. This good David and Goliath plot reveals how difficult it is to keep the peace after a civil war like the one in Northern Ireland. Netflix M 3
Shooter Fascinating movie about a top military sniper who unsuspectingly has been used to protect a paramilitary corporation used by a US Senator to murder innocent civilians to achieve his goals in Ethiopia. The movie is very effective at allowing us to learn the criminal threads at the same time as the hero finds them out. And it is also very good at showing the lack of moral compass of the Senator and of his employees. The plot was based on a novel called Point of Impact. A perfect suspense movie that would be hard to improve. Netflix 20070323 Antoine Fuqua M 1
Shooter A newer 3 season series using the same plot as the movie Shooter from the novel Point of Impact for the first season. Interesting extension of the plot over longer episodes with slightly different scenes. Find the review of the movie Shooter in this same table. Then season 2 and 3 develop very interestng continuations of the first plot. Netflix 20161115 Antoine Fuqua S 2

He moves in and disrupts his divorced sister's family life, but at the same time starts moving their life towards a normality that they had not seen for a long time. Marilyn's Eyes Intriguing italian movie about a mentally ill chef and his girlfriend who open a restaurant staffed by the inmates of their assylum. Far fetched and slow moving at times but giving valuable insights about life and relationships. Netflix M 3
Yara Very well dramatized true story about the persistency of a woman prosecutor in the area of Bergamo, Northern Italy, who took the case of a dissappeared 13 year old girl for whom there were the familiar lack of clues found in many of these cases. She kept looking for leads and a couple of years later her remains were unexpectedly found in a field with DNA from the attacker. But at that time there were no databases of DNA available for forensic investigators so the second needle in the haystack situation arose for the prosecutor looking for the attacker. After a few more years of well dramatized struggle against politicians profiting from the catchy story the prosecutor finally succeeds is finding the culprit based on DNA evidence. This was a very notable case that proved the power of DNA investigations and made history in Bergamo. The movie appropriately chose not to show any gore, just the investigation. Netflix M 3

La Revolution Shocking French period piece about the French Revolution where the idea of the nobility's "blue blood" is imagined as a plague which gives immortality and an appetite for the human flesh of living poor people. The affected nobles become like vampires that can create more of themselves. Since we know about the French Revolution we constantly anticipate the revolt of the people, an expectation which the plot feeds to increase its interest. In spite of its creative imagination the execution is so bloody heavy handed that it sinks to the very bottom of its dark well Netflix S 0
Anne with an "e" A superb Canadian version of the classic Anee of the Green Gables. While it could be considered a teen age woman's movie, that is just the point of departure of its wide commentary on people's insensitivity and the real life of persons. In each episode the series creates a dramatic tension by giving one type of human prejudice the upper hand in disturbing the life of good people and when all seems lost, shows which resources of those same good people can be used to overcome the polluting effect of bad behavior in society. Netflix 20170319 Moira Walley-Beckett S 1

How to Survive Being Single An incredible Mexican modern series which reveals to what extent TV series have evolved past all frontiers of traditional sexual censorship in society. Decades after the development of contraceptives society has changed in its acceptance of sexuality as a normal human appetite just as much as food and this outrageous series marks an iconic point in the road. The extreme examples from the "streaming" industry show to what extent the fantasies of a large part of society have moved beyond any external boundaries. While this does not necessarily mean that society behaves as shown, it does mean that society feels free enough to find humor where it used to find cause for censorship. Hard to tell at this point whether the changes allowing for more honesty in societal dialogue might eliminate unhealthy repression or through an excess of freedom eliminate useful protective controls instead. These outrageous situations are often quite funny. Helps if you speak Spanish. Amazon Prime S 3

Anatomy of a Scandal British superb series about a very upper class model couple in politics whose husband is caught in a shameless affair. The series starts by questioning why the husband with a beautiful wife would do this; a political analyst called in to "fix" the problem states "it is surprising that people go out for hamburgers when they have stake at home." But beauty is not the issue. As the series progresses through flashbacks and a trial for rape, we find out why. The politician and his wife had wealth, high birth entitlement, beauty, and a cheating disposition. But he could not resist the sexiest of all, "intelligence." An epic gladiatorial rape trial fight to the death between these qualities. On the way to its rewarding resolution, the series manages to visit a great delusion of the conservative right. In a moment of lucid insight, the wife says "We've always been so lucky." The husband responds "Not luck, smart decisions and bloody hard work." This reveals his blindspot as to how much of his success was built over an accidental birth entitlement which he did not earn, and it makes it easy for him to ignore other people's rights. Mi Obra Maestra Interesting Argentinian film about an excentric painter who looks down on the burgeosie and paints his vision of their expressionistic inner demons and his art gallery friend who keeps trying to help him survive by toning down his "tear down" impulses. In Family I Trust (Gente que viene y bah) Superb Spanish comedy. The phrase "In God We Trust" is a statement of complete faith. By replacing "In God We" with "In Family I" the distributors of this delightful movie demonstrate that if God created a universe where He does not directly intervene, maybe our families which He also created, provide all we need to thrive, IF we have a family which supports our pursuit of happiness. As the mother tells her daughter : "Make sure you do what you love." Netflix 20190118 Patricia Font M 1
Ay, mi madre Comedy exploring many funky characters from the South of Spain in what one might think of as "Comedia a la Espanola," style. Like the "Commedia all'Italiana" in the 1960's it uses satire of manners, farcical and grotesque overtones, a strong focus on "spicy" social issues (sexual matters, funerals, marriage of the Catholic clergy). Traditional flamenco singing and customs complete this cheerful package dealing with a mother's wise inheritance Netflix 2019 Frank Ariza M 1

La Tribu (The Tribe) A bus impact produces temporary amnesia in an executive and sets up many comic situations that work well. But at the core of this funny movie is a very important question: what is more immoral, an executive copulating with a consenting employee in his office, or the same executive firing 300 people because he enjoys firing people. The late 20th century was the end of the repressive sexual taboos necessitated by the lack of effective contraception. Society's views have changed so radically since then that one is amazed to see the new views as shown in movies Netflix 20180316 Fernando Colomo M 2

The Beast An Italian Rambo with an interesting hero. It has some hard to believe action inmediately after significant injuries and some inconsistencies where the hero gets beat up by the last guy after he has destroyed 9 gangsters in a row. It is amazing how those details grate on the viewer making the plot feel flaky. But it succeeds as an exotic Rambo. Netflix M 3

Our Lovers (Nuestros Amantes) A brilliant Spanish script that makes one think of Aaron Sorkin in its agility. El Club de los Buenos Infieles (The Club of the Good Infidels) A funny Spanish entry in the inexaustible comedies about unfulfilling sex - this time it is four men friends comparing notes and deciding to do something to improve their marital sex lives... without being unfaithful. RRR (Rise, Roar, Revolt) In the 1920's, Bheem and Ram were two strong, powerful revolutionaries that fought the British. They are presented as larger than life using CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) in this spectacular epic that tells a very good fictional story of how these virtuous heros overcame a British military which was rather evil at times. This movie creatively uses CGI to present the hero's strength by showing him overcoming a huge tiger for instance (the obviously unrealistic scene is used skillfully as one would use say heroic music to show those qualities of a hero - I was surprised to enjoy the portrayals in spite of their unrealistic features as successful uses of the poetic potential of film images - films can use unrealistic images to describe character!). The movie rallies the persistent grudge of the racially underprivileged that are unfairly discriminated on the basis of popular standards of beauty. Netflix 20220601 SS Rajamouli M 1
Restless (Sans Repit) Intriguing French police suspense movie with well done relentless twists and turns. It keeps ones interest through a solid original plot which it unfolds gradually. Netflix 20220225 Regis Blondeau M 3
For your own good (Es por tu bien) Good Spanish comedy where three fathers opposed to their daughters fiances try to scare them away surreptitiously without their knowledge. Fun to find out the slur words Spaniards use to look down on other people. Unfortunately, the plot loses freshness when they continue it too long. Netflix 20170224 CarlosTheron M 3
Your Son (Tu Hijo) After his son is brutally beat up a medical doctor father takes the law into his own hands. What started as a mystery suspense investigation into a crime, ends up setting us up for a valuable meditation into another crime which we did not expect. The movie shows assumptions must not be trusted, by making us fall into the trap ourselves. Well done but difficult to watch. Would not recommend it except it made me see another important point of view. Netflix 20181109 Miguel angel Vivas M 3
Respect Well made life of Aretha Franklin. The movie shows how being a good little girl who followed the advice of experts prevented her from trusting her instincts for an unduly long time. Once she started following her spirit her incredible talent shined and accumulated hits. But then her demons tripped her. At the lowest point she prayed and was rescued to produce her best selling record with all gospel songs. From then on she had a long an fruitful career and sang at Obama's inauguration. Very beautiful singing all the way through. Amazon Prime M 2
Kesari (Saffron) Epic heroic saga of how 21 Sikhs fought 10,000 Afghans for several hours in the battle of Saragarhi Fort. The resistance of the Sikhs allowed time for reinforcements to arrive which spelled victory for the British in this war. Saffron is the traditional color of Sikhs and in this battle they fought under it. Exciting story of the defense of the fort but more interestingly the inner life of Sikkhism, an admirable religion which dedicates itself to helping others. Their Gurdwara temples serve meals to all comers every day by having members rotate preparation duties continuously. The movie shows the 21 Sikhs building a mosque for the Muslims in the adjoining town. During the assaults, it was the duty of one of the garrison to give water to the wounded of the enemy while the fight was going on! Amazon Prime 20190321 Anurag Singh M 2
I love you, stupid (Te quiero imbecil) A Spanish movie about a guy at 35 living with his parents, who gets dropped by his 8 year fiancee and the next day gets fired. Back to School Complex ensemble movie with many interlacing subplots about a gradeschool mates reunion in their 30's. The central characters were an ugly fatso that became thin and good looking his unpopular nerdy chess club friend. The animosity between two main types is given a quick selected overview at the beginning in a class picture, and then as grown up characters: the chess club nerds intellectuals who became white collar workers and their non-academic rivals who became blue collar. The competition is set as to who ended up more successful. Netflix 20190830 Remy Four, Julien War M 3
Interceptor Superb morality tale about the dangers of movement conservatives in the US, done as an exciting action movie. The major risky alliances of the right are incarnated into characters who act out their prejudices against US traditions. A rightist 1% super wealthy privileged guy wants to destroy American democracy to completely control the government. He has made a pact with Russian gangsters who have stolen several nuclear missiles and aim to destroy every large American city so that the one percenter can start a dictatorship from scratch. The action takes place in the middle of the Pacific in an US army interceptor rocket platform that can destroy any missile targeting the US if they catch them within 12 minutes after launch. An ally of the wealthy terrorist is an army traitor inside the interceptor station who believes the US stands for white supremacy. The heroine is a tough army lady captain who suffered sexual harassment from an old general, whom she managed to get expelled. The good ol’boy army guys never forgave her and continue to slurr her. Her father gives her the best advice: “Never stop fighting them.” Good advice in fighting crazy movement conservatives as they unbelievably abandon US ideals of democracy and human rights in favor of reinstating the super wealthy as the new kings. The President of the US, also a woman, provides strong support to save the country. A Hindu immigrant corporal, who loves the US, and whom the white supremacist despises of course, helps the captain. Finally, a bearded long hair TV salesman in Los Angeles representing the left, makes a cameo appearance cheering for the heroine (he is the husband of the heroine in real life). It was funny to see right leaning reviewers in google.com trying their best to stop people from watching this movie by criticizing the acting for not being good enough. In the meantime, people have made this movie the number 1 most watched in Netflix! Gives one hope that most Netflix subscribers know very well what is good for the United States. Netflix 20220526 Matthew Reilly M 1
Let's Dance French movie about a son deciding to leave his job working for his contractor father to follow his bliss of hip hop dancing. With his friends he travels to Paris to participate in a dance contest. But he runs out of money and is not confident that he can lead his group to victory. He has to ask a ballet teacher who was the lover of his now dead mother if he can stay at his home. The ballet teacher who is looking for something to inject some life energy to his ballet students agrees he can stay but only if he teaches hip hop to his ballet students. Ballet requires so much methodical learning that it tends to kill self-expression. The young dancer agrees and ends up developing feelings for the top ballet student and the movie builds up to a climax of the most gorgeous choreographic combinination of ballet and hip hop. The ballerina is an angel descended to earth and their dance together is worth the wait. Netflix 20190312 Ladislas Chollat M 2
We Die Young Very close to the famous monuments in Washington DC there is a poor neighborhood where rival latino gangs fight each other. This violent movie shows you that world where a teen age kid delivers drugs for the leader of leaders who somehow protects him. The Endless Trench The Spanish Civil war ended in 1939 and there were many anti-Franco guys that hid themselves to survive. In 1969 Franco agreed to amnesty. Many of these hidden guys came out after 30 years of hiding in small spaces behind walls. A game of crazy names for movies was won by "20 years under a doormat." This movie is that story!
